01 SOUND / CRYSTAL BOWLS
EVERY SOUND HAS ITS OWN VOICE.
Even with the same note name,
the same size,
the same material,
every Crystal Bowl has a different resonance.
- Frequency.
- Overtones.
- The attack of the sound.
- The length of its resonance.
- The changes that arise when it overlaps with other sounds.
And a presence that belongs to that sound alone,
one that numbers cannot fully capture.
SOUND at Amoa Japan begins
by listening to each of those differences.
Not making sounds the same,
but knowing each one’s character,
and searching for the relationships in which those characters resonate most beautifully.
In this, we sense a possibility that goes beyond music.

PURE INTONATION
DIFFERENT, YET IN HARMONY.
Resonating, just as we are.
Amoa Japan explores Pure Intonation
not only to create “beautiful intervals.”
In pure intonation, resonance is built from the relationships between sounds.
Sounds with different frequencies
relate to one another while keeping their own character,
and when they overlap, a single harmony is born.
We are drawn to that resonance.
To become one, we don’t need to become the same.
Things that are different
can resonate together while staying different.
It also echoes what Amoa Japan holds dear:
“each of us being ourselves, while living together.”
For Amoa Japan, pure intonation is music theory,
and also a way of exploring the question, “What is harmony?”

LISTENING
Listening not only with the ears, but with the whole body.
Do we listen to sound only with our ears?
The feeling of low tones resonating in the body.
The feeling of the space itself changing the moment several sounds overlap.
The feeling of the body growing quiet within a long, lingering resonance.
When we play the Crystal Bowl,
the very act of “listening” begins to expand.
At Amoa Japan, while we measure frequencies and analyze pitch and overtones,
we value just as much actually listening with our ears and feeling with our bodies.
What numbers tell us.
What the ears tell us.
What the body tells us.
Moving back and forth between all of them,
we explore the possibilities of sound.

SELECTING THE SOUND
Music begins with choosing a single bowl.
Meeting a Crystal Bowl
is a little different from choosing a finished instrument off a shelf.
We play each bowl,
measure its frequency,
listen to its overtones,
and search for the sounds it resonates with.
Sometimes, to find a single tone we have not yet met,
we listen to dozens, even hundreds, of bowls.
As an authorized distributor of Crystal Tones, Amoa Japan offers Crystal Bowls individually, and also selects and designs sets based on Pure Intonation.
- The bowls a person already has.
- The music they want to play.
- The place where they will play.
- The resonance they are looking for.
Listening to all of these,
we build a relationship of sounds that is theirs alone.
For us, selection is not a step before the sale.
It is already part of making music.

FROM INSTRUMENT TO MUSIC.
Delivering the instrument, and nurturing the sound beyond it.
We don’t want the day a bowl arrives to be the end.
How to combine them.
How to make them resonate.
How to understand frequencies.
How to find your own sound.
Amoa Japan’s SOUND has grown from selling Crystal Bowls into
- Pure Intonation Set Design
- Frequency Measurement
- Sound Consultation
- Performance
- Education
- Research
- Contents
— and it keeps growing.
From choosing an instrument
to understanding sound.
From understanding sound
to making your own music.
And on to each person’s own expression.
We don’t only deliver the Crystal Bowl as an instrument.
We also nurture the music and culture that grow from it.

RESEARCH
We trust our senses. That is why we check.
- Beautiful.
- Comfortable.
- It resonates in the body.
We treasure what we feel about sound.
At the same time,
we treasure the question:
why do we feel this way?
Measuring frequencies.
Looking at overtones.
Testing the relationships between sounds.
Measuring what changes appear in the body through performance.
Questions born from our senses
are checked through research and technology.
Then what we discover
goes back into performance, selection and education.
SENSE → RESEARCH → CREATE → LISTEN
Repeating this cycle,
Amoa Japan deepens its understanding of sound.
SOUND AS CULTURE.
From resonance, a new culture.
What we aim for
is not only to sell many Crystal Bowls.
More people playing.
More people learning about sound.
More people measuring frequencies themselves
and thinking about the relationships between sounds.
And each of them
beginning to make music of their own.
From there, new performances are born,
new experiences are born,
and they pass on to the next person.
That is how sound becomes culture.
Through Pure Intonation and the Crystal Bowl,
Amoa Japan nurtures the possibility of a music
in which each person’s sound can exist freely and resonate with others.

DIFFERENT, YET IN HARMONY.
Resonating, just as we are.
Each different sound,
without losing its character,
creates a single resonance.
What we see in the Crystal Bowl
may be the very world Amoa Japan wants to create.
Each of us being ourselves.
And different things
existing together, bringing out the best in one another.
Exploring that possibility through sound.
That is SOUND at Amoa Japan.
